Tackling Time Blindness: Evidence based tools to help you better manage your time.
Aug 09, 2024Hey there, and welcome! If you’ve ever found yourself wrestling with that tricky old friend “Time Blindness,” you’re in the right place. Today, I’m sharing some of my go-to time management techniques—consider them my little gift to help you tackle those time struggles head-on.
When I talk about time blindness with my clients—whether they’re teenagers or adults—I often use the “internal clock” analogy. It’s a simple way to explain how our sense of time works (or sometimes doesn’t work).
Imagine you have an internal clock that’s meant to keep you aware of how much time is passing. For some people, that clock ticks loudly and consistently. They know exactly how much time is slipping by, and they can adjust their actions accordingly. Need to pick up the pace? Slow down? Reprioritize? No problem—they’ve got it covered. They have a schedule, they stick to it, and they can accurately gauge how much time they need to get things done.
But for many living with ADHD, that internal clock isn’t so reliable. It ticks softly, and sometimes it skips beats entirely. You know what you need to do, but before you know it, you’re lost in a rabbit hole on Instagram or running late to an appointment because you stumbled upon an enthralling new podcast about the French Revolution. And, let’s be honest, no matter where your dentist is, travel time is always 20 minutes in your mind, right?
So, What Exactly Is Time Blindness?
For many ADHDers, time doesn’t feel fixed—it’s fluid. Fifteen minutes spent searching for the “perfect” stock image on Shutterstock magically transforms into two hours. It’s fun, it’s engaging, and—oops—how did you end up deep-diving into Sheepadoodle photos when your presentation was supposed to be on the importance of meditation for ADHD management?
On the flip side, ten minutes of folding laundry can feel like a never-ending marathon. Why? Because it’s just plain boring.
But don’t worry—we’ve got some techniques to help you manage this slippery sense of time. Remember, these tools aren’t one-size-fits-all. The key is to experiment and find what works best for you.
The Pomodoro Technique
Meet the Pomodoro Technique, your new productivity BFF! This method is all about working in short, focused bursts, with regular breaks to recharge. It’s simple, effective, and perfect for anyone who struggles with maintaining focus.
The beauty of the Pomodoro Technique lies in its simplicity. Throughout the day, you break your time into small, manageable increments, tackling tasks one step at a time and taking breaks as needed. It’s a fuss-free way to boost your productivity.
Post-It Note Power!
This is a personal favorite of mine, especially when I’ve got a big project with a million ideas swirling in my head. If you struggle to get those ideas down on paper, this technique might be just what you need.
All you need are some Post-It notes, a timer (you can use your Pomodoro timer here!), a pen, and a whiteboard. Write down each idea or task on a separate note, and then stick them up on your board. It’s a simple yet powerful way to organize your thoughts and see the bigger picture.
Goblin Tools: Magic ToDo
Let’s talk about Goblin Tools’ ‘Magic ToDo,’ the ultimate app to streamline your to-do list. This app makes organizing tasks and setting deadlines a breeze, helping you stay on top of your game without any extra hassle.
A smart colleague introduced me to this app a few months ago, and it’s been a total game-changer for me. My clients love it too—it’s easy to use, incredibly effective, and, well, a bit magical.
